OY PANDA AB HISTORY

1920

The company, then called SOK (Suomen Osuuskauppojen Keskuskunta), started its manufacturing of confectionary in their cramped premises above the berry processing facility. To begin with the company manufactured wrapped sweets, jarred sweets, cough drops and jelly sweets. In the late 1920ies the production of sweets was moved to its own factory building.

1925

The factory starts producing chocolate.

1927

The factory starts producing liquorice.

1933

The production of soft liquorice begins. The Panda liquorice has a genuine and excellent taste which still produced by a traditional cooking method.

1952

The Panda brand is born. The company’s graphic designer sketches a chocolate bar wrapper portraying a panda bear. The bar is named Panda Pop.

1957

The production of Pepe Liquorice starts.

1961

The name of the factory is changed into Panda chocolate factory SOK Vaajakoski.

1963

The company introduces export sales to USA. Then the export area expands to new markets and at the moment products are sold to over 25 countries. Currently the export share is one third of the company’s net sales.

1967

The factory starts producing assorted chocolates.

1977

The company starts making the All Natural liquorice products.

1986

The company establishes itself as the market leader within the Finnish liquorice industry.

1988

The company management purchases Panda of SOK.

1995

The Norwegian food manufacturing company Rieber & Søn purchased the Panda business.

2000

The company management and MB Funds buys the company.

2005

The Norwegian supplier of consumer goods Orkla Asa buys the company.

2011

The company concentrates all production at Vaajakoski to one main factory building. Previous industry investments included the extension of the sweet factory in 1929, the building of the chocolate factory in 1969 and the extension of it in 1988. In addition to these investments the production capacity has reached steady growth with its investments in the original chocolate production line from the 1950ies to its recent investments in its liquorice production line in the late 20th century.

The Orkla group implements reorganisation of the Nordic Confectionery & Snacks business operations. Oy Panda Ab is merged into Chips Ab.
